This question has several parts. Note that the post is due MONDAY, MARCH 17.
1. First, what are your general impressions of the film?
2. Sherry Ortner asserts that women tend to be identified with nature and men with culture, to the detriment of women. Do you think the film makes this distinction in its portrayal of Kahlo, and if so how?
3. The other essays address some ways in which Kahlo--or "Frida"--has been portrayed at the intersection of art history and popular culture. Both essays focus on how Kahlo's mythologizing plays out out in relation to her being a woman, in particular with regard to her own manipulation of her image, although the authors come to somewhat different conclusions. How do you think the film participated further in the creation of a Kahlo's image as women and as an artist? Do you think Mencimer's and Bergman-Carton's observations are relevant to the film, and why or why not?
